Ventrilo and Skype: Peer-to-Peer versus Client-Server in VOIP

Ventrilo and Skype are both widely used PC-based VOIP applications. While both are excellent and ultimately similar utilities, they are almost the complete opposite when it comes to their underlying network architectures. Ventrilo uses the Client-Server architecture whereas Skype uses Peer-to-Peer (often abbreviated as p2p). Because of this distinction, there are several situations in which choosing one over the other may be of greater benefit. In this article we will be discussing the use of both programs in the context of business conferences, social groups and gaming clans or guilds.

Ventrilo MOTD: Adding Colors, Fonts, Formatting and other styles

A rather obscure feature of Ventrilo is the ability to add custom styling such as colors and fonts to the server MOTD. It’s not a built-in functionality of Ventrilo so we’ll have to use a couple of other programs to make use of styled ventrilo MOTDs: mainly notepad and Wordpad, which should come standard with all modern Windows operating systems. It’s actually a pretty easy process – just copying and pasting for the most part.

Download Ventrilo 3.0.5

Ventrilo 3.0.5 for Windows has been released. Version 3.0.5 introduces support for the Logitech G35 headset and the G19 Color Gamepanel LCD. It also adds new options for those with the Logitech G13 and G15 gaming keyboard. In non-hardware related changes, the in-game overlay has been streamlined with several more in-game options and optimizations. Our new San Jose POP will furthermore strengthen our west coast network which already consists of Seattle, Washington and Los Angeles, California. Our Tokyo, Japan POP will mark our entrance into the Asian gaming VOIP market. Our servers in Japan should provide lower latencies for users in Asia and the Pacific Islands.
